djezi: The Funk

To Be Excused (Kingston Bullet Extended Mix)

(Imaginary Johnny & djezi)
July 31, 2011
Lyrics: Stuart Wolferman Music: Imaginary Johnny and djezi

This is my third interpretation of this song.  The bassline came to me suddenly as I was working on my second interpretation of "To Be Excused", the "Unhinged" version (also available at djezi.net), and I built this version around it.  I had been thinking about reggae/dub rhythms for a while, but not specifically for this song.  It just sort of came together that way.  I think this is Stuart's favorite.  I think it's mine, too.

Noah built his ark before it rained

I keep my good boots by the door

I track tornados as they land

To see what the angels are aiming for

Noah built his ark before it rained

I keep my flashlight in the car

I have pills by my bed

But I'm not so unhinged anymore

I wait

Wait

To be excused

Noah built his ark before it rained

I bury my bullets in the yard

I stopped hearing from my boys

I may have pushed them a little hard

I wait

Wait

To be excused

I lick my lips and wait for the rain, rain, rain

Rebels to run over, will all be excused

We're up to our necks

We're up to our necks

We're up to our necks and we'll all

Be excused
